Could Multilingualism Keep You Young?
Speaking another language may be giving the aging clock a little jet lag. Researchers examined 86,149 adults aged 51 to 90 years without diagnosed dementia across 27 European countries, using a “biobehavioral clock” built from factors including cognition, functional ability, education, physical activity, cardiometabolic conditions, and sensory impairment. Functional ability was the strongest protective predictor, while hearing impairment, hypertension, and heart disease were among the major factors linked to accelerated aging. At the country level, greater multilingualism was associated with 54% lower odds of accelerated aging in the cross-sectional analysis, while monolingualism was associated with 2.11 times the odds. Longitudinally, multilingualism was associated with a 30% lower risk of accelerated aging, with a dose-response pattern: risk was 10% lower with 1 additional language, 20% lower with 2, and 29% lower with 3 or more. Most associations remained significant across age groups and after adjustment for linguistic, physical, social, and sociopolitical factors. One important wrinkle: Multilingualism was measured at the country level, not individually, and the observational design cannot establish causality. Still, your rusty high school French might be worth brushing up on.

A Juicy New Angle on HFpEF
Pomegranates may have more heart than anyone gave them credit for. Researchers at King’s College London found that urolithin A—a gut-derived metabolite produced from compounds in foods including pomegranates—directly modified cysteine 42 (C42) on cGMP-dependent protein kinase Iα (PKGIα), activating a pathway involved in blood vessel and cardiac relaxation. In a multihit mouse model of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), 7 days of oral urolithin A improved several measures of diastolic function, including global longitudinal strain, reverse longitudinal strain rate, and E/e′ ratio, while reducing cardiac mass, fibrosis, and cardiomyocyte size and boosting running distance. Ejection fraction remained preserved, as HFpEF etiquette demands. Importantly, most benefits disappeared in mice with a redox-insensitive C42 mutation, pointing squarely at PKGIα activation as the mechanism. Urolithin A also gave engineered human heart tissue a tune-up: after 120 minutes, relaxation times improved by 32% to 40% and contraction times by 34% to 49%, without reducing maximal force or triggering arrhythmias. The study was preclinical, used only male mice, and tested human tissue derived from a single donor cell line—but apparently this pomegranate metabolite came ready to mingle with cardiology.

Fish Bone Makes a Gut-Wrenching Move
Talk about the catch of the day refusing to leave quietly. In a recent case, a 67-year-old woman presented with weeks of epigastric pain, dyspepsia, and weight loss, despite an unremarkable gastroscopy just 6 months earlier. She was afebrile with mildly elevated inflammatory markers, but contrast-enhanced CT spotted a linear hyperdense object lodged in the gastric antral wall with an intramural abscess, initially raising concern for gastric cancer with abscess formation. Gastroscopy added to the drama, showing inflamed mucosa and an opening draining mucopurulent material. Antibiotics shrank the abscess and inflammation, but the stubborn object stayed put. Laparoscopic surgery finally solved the mystery: a fish bone embedded in the stomach wall. Postoperative CT showed complete abscess resolution, and the patient was discharged 5 days later without complications. The researchers noted most ingested foreign bodies—80% to 90%—pass spontaneously, with surgery required in only about 1%, but fish bones can perforate and form abscesses. CT is particularly useful for finding these culinary fugitives, especially with thin slices, multiplanar reconstructions, and bone-window settings. Sometimes the one that got away can also be the one to overstay their dinner welcome.

Tea Time Takes a Mouthwash Turn
Another cup of tea? Not quite—this time, green tea is getting swished instead of sipped. In a recent randomized controlled trial, researchers in New Delhi enrolled 64 patients with stage 3 or 4 head and neck cancer receiving palliative care to see whether a green tea (Camellia sinensis)-based mouth rinse could freshen up more than the study protocol. Patients received usual care alone or usual care plus the green tea rinse 3 times daily for 6 weeks, with oral health assessed at baseline and every 2 weeks. The green tea group showed significant improvements over time in both Oral Assessment Guide and Oral Hygiene Index-Simplified scores (P < .001 for both). The rinse did not, however, improve everything on the menu: there were no significant between-group differences in pain (P = .73) or oral health–related quality of life (P = .34). For a column that keeps finding new jobs for tea, apparently “mouthwash” was only a matter of time.
