Shellfish Toxin? Send in the Frog
Bullfrogs may be hopping into the antidote business. Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, tested saxiphilin—a toxin-binding protein that acts like a molecular sponge—against saxitoxin, a paralytic shellfish toxin with no antidote, classified as a chemical weapon. Among female mice given 2.5 times the median lethal dose, survival reached 100% when saxiphilin and saxitoxin were premixed, 83% when saxiphilin was administered 1 minute before exposure, and 90% when given 1 minute afterward, compared with 8% to 20% among controls. Saxiphilin also reduced paralysis and seizures and restored toxin-blocked human sodium channels in vitro. However, the unblinded study used intraperitoneal dosing, only female mice, and tested a narrow treatment window, leaving human safety and delivery unknown. Consider the bullfrog officially on call.

REM Keeps an Ear on the Heart
It turns out our brains are total divas about their bedtime playlists. Researchers at Lausanne University Hospital tracked high-density EEG in 25 healthy volunteers to examine how the brain’s responses to external sounds and internal heartbeats change across wakefulness and REM sleep. While external sound processing progressively drops off from wakefulness through tonic REM and hits its absolute floor in phasic REM, internal cardiac monitoring stays surprisingly sharp. Heartbeat-evoked responses were actually amplified during both tonic and phasic REM compared with wakefulness, and these differences were not explained by changes in cardiac rhythm or its variability. By combining these signals into a slick "audio-cardio index," the team found that vigilance state explained 20% of the index's variance, compared with just 9% for auditory and 12% for cardiac markers alone. A Gut Feeling About White Tea
White tea brought some serious structural flair to the inflammatory bowel disease lab. Researchers isolated WTP-2, a 150.79k-Da pectic polysaccharide with a triple-helix structure, then tested it in macrophages and mice with dextran sulfate sodium–induced colitis. At 400 μg/mL, WTP-2 reduced lipopolysaccharide-induced tumor necrosis factor α and interleukin 6 secretion by 57.6% and 72.4%, respectively; unraveling its triple helix erased those effects. In mice, 160 mg/kg reduced disease activity scores by 54.5%, helped preserve the colonic barrier, and reshaped gut microbes and metabolites. Multiomics analyses linked the action to suppression of the IL-17–JNK–AP-1 inflammatory pathway. The findings remain preclinical, so nobody should prescribe a teapot just yet—but this molecular brew certainly knows how to stir the pot.

Bestie Ambitions Get Measured
Friendship just got its own personality test. In five studies involving 5,707 participants, researchers developed the 10-item Friendship Making Orientation Scale to measure two distinct social appetites: wanting a wide friendship network and craving intimacy with many friends. Published in Evolution and Human Behavior, the scale showed solid reliability, with scores remaining stable over 5 to 8 weeks, and its two-factor structure held across samples from Egypt, the Philippines, and Brazil—although country-level mean comparisons were not supported. Among 457 US undergraduates, desire for intimacy with many friends predicted greater interest in meeting fellow participants and a higher likelihood of sharing an email address or introductory message, even after accounting for loneliness, extraversion, social motives, and current friend count. Higher overall friendship-making orientation was also associated with greater closeness and generosity in an experimental game. Interestingly, social butterflies did not necessarily trade depth for breadth; wider networks could coexist with intimacy and commitment. Apparently, some people do not want fewer besties; they want the whole brunch table, full of the right people.
