Lung ultrasonography was found to be an effective diagnostic tool for pneumonia in adults; new findings may support its broader use in clinical practice.
Researchers compared the diagnostic reliability of lung ultrasonography with traditional methods like chest radiography and computed tomography scans by analyzing data from 29 studies involving 6,702 participants. The findings indicated that lung ultrasonography had a sensitivity of 92% (95% CI, 91-93%) and a specificity of 94% (95% CI, 94-95%) in diagnosing pneumonia, suggesting it could be an alternative to chest radiography and computed tomography scans.
Published in Advances in Respiratory Medicine, the study noted that lung ultrasonography is portable and can be used by non-radiology physicians, potentially benefiting remote or under-resourced areas. Lung ultrasonography can facilitate bedside diagnosis of pneumonia, reducing the need for radiation exposure from traditional imaging methods, which is particularly useful for critically ill patients or those unable to be transported for imaging.
The findings were based on comprehensive literature search and data extraction from Medline, Cochrane, and Crossref databases, adhering to specific inclusion criteria.
