A fowl cause of urinary obstruction
A chicken bone picked a surprisingly ambitious place to cause trouble in an 89-year-old woman with chronic left-sided hydronephrosis, recurrent urinary tract infections, and repeated hospitalizations. She presented with lethargy, poor oral intake, and confusion after outpatient antibiotics failed, with a white blood cell count of 24.2 × 10^9/L and C-reactive protein of 155 mg/L. Blood cultures grew Klebsiella pneumoniae, and urine cultures grew Enterococcus faecium. Targeted intravenous antibiotics initially helped, but she quickly deteriorated and inflammatory markers rose after treatment stopped. CT supplied the plot twist: a chicken bone lodged in the diverticular sigmoid colon had pierced the bowel wall and compressed the distal left ureter, causing severe hydroureteronephrosis and renal parenchymal atrophy. Similar findings had actually appeared on CT 3 years earlier without the culprit being identified. After 2 rounds of conservative antibiotic management failed, interventional radiology placed an 8.5-Fr antegrade nephroureteric stent, relieving the obstruction; antibiotics were stopped 5 days later without complication, and she ultimately returned home with regular stent exchanges. Most ingested foreign bodies pass without complication, making this reported first case of direct obstructive uropathy from one a rather impressive résumé for a rogue piece of poultry.

When dry heat puts sweat on pause
Sweating may be the body’s built-in air conditioner, but in extreme dry heat, the physics can get a little sweaty itself. Arizona State University researchers paired experiments using a 35-segmented sweating thermal manikin with validated digital-twin simulations to investigate how temperature and perspiration vapor influence airflow near the skin. They identified a “dueling buoyancy” effect: hot air cooled by the skin becomes denser and sinks, while humid air produced by evaporating sweat is lighter and rises. When those forces duke it out, near-skin airflow can nearly stall, putting the brakes on evaporation. Across 100 simulated conditions spanning 20°C to 50°C and 10% to 90% relative humidity, sweat evaporation at 41°C and 10% relative humidity was almost 56% lower than standard calculations predicted. In another heat check, modeling a lightly dressed young man spending 2 hours in stagnant 41°C air at 20% humidity and a mean radiant temperature of 55°C showed that standard calculations underestimated core temperature by 1°C and mean skin temperature by 1.5°C. Even modest airflow reduced those differences considerably. Turns out, sweat can bring its own traffic jam to the skin.

Yoga stretches into IBS care
Yoga may be doing more than loosening tight hamstrings—it could give irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) symptoms some breathing room, too. A systematic review of 10 studies found that yoga was generally associated with improvements in gastrointestinal symptoms and quality of life, with some studies also reporting improvements in anxiety, depression, and stress, with interventions lasting 6 to 12 weeks and ranging from hatha yoga, including Iyengar-based practices, to Ashtanga, Upa, pranayama, and even laughter yoga. In studies using the IBS Symptom Severity Scale as the primary outcome, benefits ranged from moderate to large. One 12-week hatha yoga trial reported a mean 120-point reduction, with over 90% of yoga-group participants reaching a clinically meaningful 50-point drop by week 6 and nearly 100% doing so by week 12. Another trial found yoga and a low-FODMAP diet produced similar symptom improvements through 24 weeks, while an 8-week virtual yoga program improved quality of life, fatigue, and perceived stress. No serious yoga-related adverse events were reported. Still, the evidence could use some strengthening: studies were small, yoga protocols varied considerably, and none received the review’s highest methodological-quality rating. But for now, the gut-brain axis may have found one more stretch in its repertoire.

Could L-theanine sweeten sleep?
The old-school practice of sipping a warm cup of tea before bed may have some scientific backing or busting. A systematic review examined 13 human trials involving 550 participants testing L-theanine, an amino acid naturally found in Camellia sinensis, the plant behind green and black tea, to assess its effects on sleep. Across studies, standalone L-theanine ranged from 50 to 900 mg/day, with 9 trials reporting significant or trend-level sleep benefits—including 9 of 11 using at least 200 mg/day. The strongest evidence pointed to 200 to 450 mg/day, with improvements favoring sleep quality over simply sleeping longer: shorter sleep latency, fewer nighttime awakenings, better sleep efficiency and satisfaction, and perkier mornings all made appearances. One actigraphy study found 200 mg improved sleep efficiency by 2.8 percentage points and trimmed wake time after sleep onset by 7.2 minutes vs placebo. There is one catch for tea devotees: a 200-mL cup typically contains up to about 25 mg of L-theanine, and its caffeine can complicate the bedtime equation. L-theanine was generally well tolerated, but evidence in clinical insomnia remained mixed, and most studies were small. So, even if that evening cup is soothing, don’t expect one teabag to moonlight as a sleep supplement.
